Good Morning !
RubyCubes.. I am so sorry to hear about what is happening to you.. not to mention the severe pain kidney stones cause…As you well know.. Insurance companies today rule health care.. They decide what they will pay for and if a patient needs a recommended procedure… I am so fortunate to have a terrific primary care physician… He was going through his residency when I worked in the ER…. years later my long time physician retired so I was able to become his patient before he “closed” his practice …Unfortunately it seems physicians are hesitant to prescribe opioids due to the crisis in this country… consequently people who need the medication are unable to get it…PCP are sending their patients to Pain Clinics… even for short term acute pain control.. I hope that your appointment tomorrow finds a caring..compassionate doctor who is willing to help and understand your dilemma ! I will keep you in my thoughts and pray that there is a solution to treating you and keeping you as comfortable as possible…
I am fortunate to have my job of 45 years with benefits BUT almost daily changes have made things almost unbearable….I have about 14 months until I qualify for Medicare BUT had always planned to work until I was ready to “retire “…. Each day is a challenge…Looking at all my options I don’t want to make a decision and then regret it…
Good Luck tomorrow RubyCube and please let us know how you are doing !

However, do you mind updating your wish list when you have time, so I don’t send you items that you only need one of?
Do you have a Tumblr account?

Hi Patsie! I do have a Tumblr blog with the same name- I wondered if you were the Patsie I was interacting with. I hope so π If so, I KinzPosted those Wacky things after you confirmed my Friend Request. I hope they arrived safely and made you smile! (Made me smile too- Wacky’s not my favorite. Anyone want a Wacky hot air balloon? FREE!) I just made my wishlist last night, so it’s updated- Momskinz sent me 3 exciting things today and they were Daily Kinz Care prizes. I LOVE having little things strewn about my house- it makes it look “homey”. So multiples of KinzCare prizes are welcome, if someone has spares. I only need one of anything else on there. :3

Moms – LOL thanks! I don’t know, I was a single mom for 2 years, a full-time working mom for 13 years, and up until 4 years ago I was either the sole or primary support for my family because my husband had such a difficult time getting his career off the ground after college. He got a late start and graduated right in the heart of the recession. I’ve been “adulting” hard my whole adult life. This is something altogether different.
Sheba and Patsie – Thanks! π
Gagagee – Thank you for the kind words and support! You’re such a sweetheart! And you’re spot on about the increasing reluctance of physicians to prescribe pain medication, which I understand for chronic pain or for vague, undiagnosable complaints of pain. If you’ve worked in the ER, you know that a lot of patients come in “seeking”, so doctors are understandably cautious. However, I worked in the ER for 2 years, and if a patient came in acutely passing a kidney stone and it was diagnosed with a CT scan, we gave them whatever we could to get them comfortable, and doctors always sent them home with scripts for pain meds to help control the pain. It’s an acute condition, diagnosable, and the pain caused by them is well-known and supported. When I worked triage, I could always tell immediately when a patient with a kidney stone walked into the ER. You probably could too. Next to major traumas, cardiac events, strokes, and full arrests, kidney stone patients were among my top priorities even though they’re not life-threatening. And every time I’ve been to the ER with a kidney stone, that’s the kind of treatment I’ve received.
Over the past 5-6 years, prescription of controlled medications by doctors has definitely become much stricter, and my state (KY) is extremely strict, even stricter than OH, I believe. I realized this last year when I was working for an insurance company in Cincinnati. If a patient exhibited drug seeking behavior, which was defined in a number of different ways, the company’s medical team would place them into a category that forced them to use only one pharmacy. If they used any other pharmacy for controlled medications, their meds would not be covered by their insurance. A lot of the patients who ended up in that category with those restrictions were upset by the rule. That was surprising to me because that’s the law for everyone in KY. It hasn’t always been, but around 6-8 years ago, it became law state wide that if you get controlled medications filled, they have to be at the same pharmacy. You can only use a different pharmacy if you get them officially switched over, which requires approval from your PCP. So if I decide I don’t like my current pharmacy, I can switch, but it’s a one-time thing, switching over to a new permanent pharmacy. I cannot “pharmacy hop”. Apparently that’s not the case in Ohio, or at least wasn’t last year.
At any rate, I am seriously concerned about the rising cost of health care in this country and, what seems to me, a growing lack of empathy and compassion by doctors because so many decisions are out of their control. And now, LOL, I received mixed news this weekend. I was approved for the health insurance plan that I applied to through the Marketplace, which is great! Monthly premiums are over $500/month, and I will have to return to work, but not immediately. I can get some things squared away at home, get my resume updated, and get this surgery out of the way. I’ll probably start looking for a job in early November. I would like to stay off for the holidays, and go back to work at the beginning of next year. So that is a huge relief. The insurance plan will go into effect October 1st, so I will still have to wait a couple weeks to have the surgery, but at least there is a definite finite period now. And I’m hoping that if I have to keep this snarky doctor, she’ll be more agreeable to providing pain control since the surgery can definitely occur within the next few weeks.
On the down side, I got all of the information on the plan this weekend electronically through the Marketplace’s website, and the urologist that I’m supposed to see tomorrow is not a covered provider. LOL. /face palm. So I have to call their office in the morning and cancel that appointment and then call some different providers that are covered. I’m hoping one of them can get me in within the next two weeks. If not, I’ll just have to keep the surgery with the doctor I don’t like, but I will blow her up in negative reviews.
I am so sorry to hear that things are unbearable at your job, Gagagee. After a 45 year career, 14 months to retirement is SO close, but at the same time, if you hate and dread every day that you go in, 14 months can feel like forever. I really hope that COBRA is an option for you. I am definitely no expert in that field, but it is my understanding that you can continue your health insurance under COBRA whether you resign or employment is terminated. I think people can be denied coverage through COBRA if they are terminated for certain reasons, like theft or other major violations to the employer, but otherwise you should qualify. You should have 60 days from the last day of employment to apply. The premiums are very costly. You become responsible for 100% of the cost of the premiums (actually I think it’s 102%), much of which your employer has been paying. However, your benefits should continue exactly as they have been. Like, if you have a deductible and have already met it, that should continue until the end of the enrollment period. Then it will start over just like it normally would. So everything should stay exactly the same except the amount you pay toward the monthly premiums. And as long as you don’t get into another job that offers health insurance, you should be able to keep your same plan until you retire since that’s within the 18-month period.
But seriously, consider looking at the Marketplace plans as well. If you leave your job, it’s considered a qualifying event, which should qualify you for a new plan there as well. There are 4 tiers of plans – bronze, silver, gold and platinum. At bronze level, you pay much less in premiums, but the deductibles are around $14,000/year. With each tier, you increase the amount you pay in premiums, but the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum drops substantially. The gold plan, which is what I signed up for, is less expensive than COBRA would have been, and the plan is a lot better. The only reason I would have preferred COBRA was because I had already met my $4500 deductible when I was hospitalized with new onset Afib this past May. However, after this upcoming surgery, I would have switched to the Marketplace during open enrollment, because the Marketplace plan is about $20 less a month in premiums and has a $1500 deductible, compared to the $4500 of our old plan. I have no idea what your premiums will be under COBRA or what your coverage is under your current plan, but the Marketplace is another option to explore. And they can’t deny you or raise rates for preexisting conditions.
In fact, the letter we received from my husband’s former employer about continuing our benefits under COBRA advised also looking into the Marketplace because it may be less expensive. The nice thing about COBRA is, you have 60 days to apply after your last day of employment, and if you are approved, you never have any lapse in coverage. You will get a new plan number and insurance card, but there is no gap in coverage. If you elect to go with the Marketplace, you can’t apply until after you leave the job, and you have to supply them documented proof of your last date of work. You have to apply within 60 days to qualify, and you have to get the application done and your first month’s premium paid by a certain date within that month for it to start the following month. For example, if I got everything submitted by the 26th of this month, I qualify for coverage starting October 1st. If it is after the 26th of this month, coverage would not start until November 1st. So that’s one down side to the Marketplace. You could experience a lapse in your coverage.
That said, Marketplace open enrollment this year is from Nov 1 – Dec 15, so if you find a more affordable plan there, you could drop your coverage under COBRA (assuming you go that route), and line up new coverage so there is no lapse. I’m not personally recommending the Marketplace because I like it or think it’s actually “affordable”. I hate this whole system. I’m just suggesting it because it’s another possibility to explore that may enable you to “retire” sooner than planned. Although, it sounds like you have a wonderful PCP. I would definitely make sure he’s covered before switching to any other plan.
I love my PCP too. He and I worked together at the hospital for quite a few years. He is genuinely one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and I say that both as a nurse and a patient. He has been my PCP for at least 10 years, and thankfully he is covered by this new insurance plan.
I appreciate the thoughts and well wishes, Gagagee. You are definitely in mine as well. I hope you can figure out something that enables you to get out of this awful work situation sooner rather than later. I also hope you had a wonderful day with your family! (((HUGS)))

Got my new phone today, we were gonna wait until next month, but my mom’s phone was struggling to hold a charge for long so it wouldn’t have made it that long. I got an iphone 8 and my mom got my old iphone 6. We just put a new battery in the 6 and the new software update is supposed to speed up old phones (but it’s apple, so we’ll see about that) so that phone should be good for her for a little while.
I’m having problems with my apple watch now that I paired it to the new phone. I have bluetooth enabled, but the watch is saying it isn’t connected to my phone. I may have to reset it and pair it again, which is an annoying process.
Had a dentist appointment for the first time in 3 years this morning. I have really cavity prone teeth and by some miracle I don’t have any new ones, but I do have 2 fillings that need to be redone.

Momz – it wasn’t connected to anything because I had already reset it. I ended up resetting it again and paired it again and it worked. No idea what was going on there, but at least it’s fixed. However, now I’m having a problem with connecting the phone to my car. I’ll try again tomorrow.
It’s starting to sink in how much writing i’m gonna be doing this semester. 4-6 page paper, 8-10 page paper, 10-12 page paper, and a paper with an unspecified length. Can someone please explain to me what I was thinking when I signed up for 3 writing intensive courses?
…I’m already registered for next semester… let me look at those and see if any adjustments need to be made for my sanity…
