Hi all. It has been a rough week. Hubby is still non-weight bearing and on crutches. He has gotten better on his crutches and can do a little more for himself than in the beginning, but he still struggles with getting meals for himself, so I’ve been doing a lot for him. Unfortunately, I came down with the flu over the weekend. Even though I got the flu shot in November, it hit me really hard. The fever, chills, and aches lasted 5 days. My fever finally broke yesterday afternoon. I’m still really weak and have very little voice, and I’m coughing my head off, but I think the worst is over… for me. But now my poor daughter has it. She started with a sore throat on Tuesday, and she has had a high fever, chills, and aches since yesterday morning. I took her to the doctor this afternoon, and she tested positive for the flu too. She also had her flu shot last fall. Apparently, it hasn’t been extremely effective this year.
I’ve been so sick, my poor husband has had to fend for himself. My house is a wreck. Normally my husband will jump in and help if I’m sick, but he can’t do much. And when I got sick last weekend, my daughter cooked dinner for my husband, which was really sweet, but she’s been too sick the past couple days to do anything either. LOL. We’re a hot mess! I finally got the dishes caught up this evening and cooked dinner. That’s the first cooked meal my hubby has had in days. My daughter is too sick to eat. I’ve been heating up broth for her and making her drink water. I’ve been sleeping so much, I haven’t even had the energy to play Webkinz.
I still don’t feel very well, but I’m on the upswing. I feel a whole lot better than I have the past few days. I’m going to pace myself, but I have a ton of laundry and cleaning to do over the next few days. It’s amazing how messy a house can get when mom is out of commission for 5 days! I got the kitchen cleaned up today, went to the grocery store, took my kid to the doctor, and cooked dinner. I’m happy with that for today. I’ll tackle the laundry and rest of the house over the next three days. It will probably take me all weekend to get this place back in order, but at least I finally have the energy to start tackling it.
Moms – I can’t thank you enough for that awesome gift! I was blown away! I adopted him last night, and I absolutely love him! Thank you SO much! It was the highlight of my week! 😀 (((HUGS)))
April – We have indeed had a ton of rain. The riverfront is a mess. I’m lucky to live in an area unaffected by flooding. We live in a very hilly rural area, and our house is at a pretty high elevation. We have problems sometimes when the roads are icy. There have been a few times we’ve struggled to get out of our area or to get home when it’s icy, but luckily we’ve never had a problem with flooding. How are you holding up with all this rain and flooding? I hope you’re staying dry. If not, I hear Dee owns boat. 😉
Shelly – Happy birthday! I hope you have a wonderful evening with your husband and children! How sweet of your hubby to buy you the big estore package! How fun!
Gagagee – Hugs!
Amber – As far as parenting advice goes, I’m going to echo April’s advice. A lot of women think they need to be the “perfect” mom. There is no such thing. That’s merely a social construct that has been used to keep mothers home with their children instead of working outside the home. Mothers use that construct to judge other women. And when we buy into it, mothers can experience a lot of “mommy guilt”, feeling like they are never living up to the ideal of what they should be as a mom.
That’s stinkin’ thinkin’. Don’t set unrealistic expectations for yourself. You will not do everything perfectly. You will make mistakes. You will sometimes second guess yourself and your decisions. You will not always know the “right” answer or exactly what to do for your child in every situation. Just do your best under your own unique circumstances, and love your child. Treasure every single moment you have with ME. Eighteen years seems like a long way off right now, but ask any mom here. Eighteen years from now you’ll be going… Wow, it seems like she was an infant sleeping in my arms just yesterday. It goes so fast. So live in each moment with her. Don’t let the years become mere stepping stones to her adulthood. Create new and wondrous experiences with her every day.
As her mother, you will be one of the most profound influences in her early life, but let her influence you as well. Children are not lumps of clay that must be molded into perfect little porcelain replicas of ourselves. Get to know your daughter. Give her the freedom, within safe boundaries, to be, to develop her own character and personality, and love her for who she becomes.
And most importantly, take everything everyone else, including me, tells you with a huge grain of salt. You’re an intelligent, competent woman. Trust your instincts. Listen to yourself. And if you need help, ask for it.
I’m very excited for you, Amber. I don’t have a guess as to when she’s coming, but I would go ahead and get that Mommy sign up. It sounds like she could come strolling through the gate any time now, and you’ll want her to know you’re the one she’s looking for as soon as she arrives. Many hugs to you and ME!

Take care of yourself, so you can take care of dd and dh. The house, laundry…it can wait. That is until you run out of under things! 🙂 So glad you are not in a flood area. We are safe too. OMG Amber I’m right there in the hospital with you! I’m holding your hand in spirit, and if you feel like cursing at the whole world over the pain, my spirit ears won’t mind it. 😉 You should have heard what came out of my mouth the three times I have given birth! Don’t be shy about asking for an epidural if you need it. And WALK! I swear that my own labors were so quick because I walked so much I wore holes in the corridor carpets. My first labor was only eight hours, with only 20 minutes of pushing. The other two kids practically fell out on their own!
Hugs and thoughts for anyone being affected by inclement weather. We haven’t had a bad flood in my region since hurricane Lee swept up the east coast and dropped floods on us, and that was, what, seven years ago or so? My house was safe because I’m at the top of a hill, but what a challenge it was getting anywhere!
Ruby, don’t worry, I’m planning to murder the person who invented the flu, so you and your DD will be avenged. And continued thoughts for your hubby’s recovery.

She’s here!!! And PERFECT!!! Born February 23rd at 2:19 PM. She was 19.5 in and 8 lbs 3oz.
So Thursday, I went in for a routine check up and my BP was extremely elevated. Doctor chose to send me to the hospital for monitoring…where they eventually decided to keep me because I couldn’t get BP down. My first stay at a hospital!
I was induced yesterday, but the meds they gave me caused her heart rate to drop and I eventually had cesarean. Ultimately…zero pain because I also had an epidural in hopes of delivering naturally. I am the biggest cry baby in terms if pain.
But, ME is such a great baby. Everything has been wonderful so far! Lots of family visitors today!
Thank you for the advice and well wishes. I will keep you all updated.

Awww Amber! I’m SO happy for you and your family! I’m glad ME is healthy and happy! Has everything resolved with your blood pressure now that the baby is out? I’m glad you had no pain!
I’m sure you’ll get all this from the nurses and doctors before you leave, but it’s super important with a c-section to make sure you don’t overdo it with activity. It’s major surgery, and the last thing you want to do is end up back in the hospital with a hemorrhage. So take it easy for the first 6 weeks. Let your husband and family take care of the dishes, laundry and housework so that you can take care of yourself and ME.
Hugs to you and your precious girl! Congrats! 😀

Congratulations, Amber! So glad you were able to skip the pain … epidurals are definitely the way to go. I had my twins cesarean, and actually the recovery time (at least for me) was much faster than the regular delivery. Take the pain meds and move around as soon as you are able. I had my “Baby Blue” day about 4 days later, where you think you aren’t cut out for being a mother, and you just want to go back to when you are 12, but hang in there and remember it usually passes quickly!
Wish I had a bunch of good advice, but the only thing I recommend is a little book called BabyWise. It helps you get them on a schedule to sleep through the night in about six weeks, and it worked with all of my kids. I will say, you will either love it or hate it (scheduled feeding/naps vs. demand feeding/naps), but I loved it and it saved my life. It’s a short little book, and worth the read if you can find the time!
I’m so sorry you all have the flu, Ruby! I keep hoping it is almost done, because it is such an awful one this year. But one of my boys came home with a slight fever/sore throat last night, so I’m hoping it’s not the big one. He slept through the night and is still in bed, so I’ll know more later. Keeping my fingers crossed …
Main floor house remodel is going slowwwwwly ….. I’m working on being patient, and trying to remember it will all be so nice in the end. Flooring should go in this coming week, and then I can get a few things sorted and back in place. I really need to take some video to remind me later of how bad the house looks right now. 🙂
In WW news, I got a token on the Wheel of Wishes this morning, and when I put it into the machine, it said I had a “super token” and it gave me a “token collector trophy.” What in the world?!? I’ve never heard of this before. Is this new? or has it been around forever, and I’m just finding out? Anyway, cool trophy, and it is going in my trophy room.
I just can’t get into the wacky collecting this year, because it looks exactly like last year. I would have loved it if they would have recolored one of the machines or something. So much more fun to work for something you don’t have.
Well, off to clean out some of my dock! So much stuff! We need some WW spring cleaning tips … anyone have any? I’d love to know how everyone keeps everything organized!
Happy Saturday, everyone!

AmberRose – oh I am just gushing and melting and so so so happy for you!!!
I really suggest you sleep on Sunday – no visitors, just sleep. I’m guessing you will go home Monday. I had the same thing with BP with my first, so two C-Sections and learned this lesson the hard way on baby #1. When baby #2 was born, I sent everyone home to spend the day with my oldest while the new baby and I had a very quiet rest day, and it helped so much.
We have a history of Friday babies – my mother, sister, and I were all born on Friday, and BOTH of mine were born on Friday – the 2nd C-Section was not planned for a Friday, but I went in labor early of course on a Friday. 😀
I am so very happy for you!

CONGRATULATIONS AMBER, MR. AMBER, AND ME!
I am *so* happy for you! You came through like a trooper, and you got the ultimate reward! My advice to you is to sleep as much as you can while you’re still in the hospital, because you’re not getting any sleep once you get out. ( I nursed all my kids, and the first three months for each kid was wake up every hour, on the hour, clamoring for feeding time. Madness!) It’s totally worth it though. I look upon all that lost sleep as a badge of honor. I wish you and your newly expanded family all the best! And please don’t be shy about coming here to freak out when you’re having one of THOSE DAYS…a good portion of us have been there too, and will be glad to be the shoulder to cry on, or the ear to bend, or the face to scream curses in. Remember, kids are very resilient. You might think you’re doing everything wrong, as we all did, but our kids turned out fine, and yours will too. 🙂
Congrats to Miracle for the token collector trophy! I have won only one of those in ten years of playing. It is exceedingly rare!

Gagagee, Miracle, and everyone else who has sent well wishes my way, thank you so much! You are all so sweet! I’m feeling better each day. I still have a very raspy voice. I sound like I’ve been smoking 5 packs a day for the past 50 years, but my energy levels are increasing, and I’ve been able to get a lot done the past couple days, so yay! And fortunately, my daughter’s symptoms aren’t quite as bad as mine. She had two really bad days of high fevers and aches, but she’s getting through it more quickly. She just has an awful cough, and she also sounds like she’s been smoking heavily for the past 50 years, but I think she’ll be fine to go back to school on Monday. We go back to the doctor this coming week for my husband’s leg, and we’re hoping he will be able to start partial weight bearing, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Moms – How are your mom and son doing? Has your son fully recovered from the flu? Is your mom still improving?
Patsie – My daughter and I watched most of the Olympic figure skating together. I watched everything except the dance short and free programs. Those were on the nights when I was super sick, and I didn’t even have the energy to watch TV. My daughter watched everything except the women’s short program, which was unfortunate, because that was one she was most hyped about, but she was so sick that night she couldn’t even get out of bed. Did you watch it, Patsie? If so, what was your favorite part? I loved all of it, but the showdown between the two female skaters from Russia was awesome! That was an Olympics competition to remember!
Amber – Wow! It sounds like c-sections are the “in” thing. LOL. I had my one and only kid c-section too. Just keep in mind that if you decide to have more kids, they don’t automatically have to be c-section. A lot of women will have subsequent c-sections, but some women want to try a natural delivery, and a VBAC is sometimes an option.
With regard to feedings and schedule, I did things a bit differently with my daughter. I don’t recommend it or promote it. In fact, as a nurse, I would tell patients to do the exact opposite of what I did. But it worked so well for me!
There’s an old book and philosophy called The Family Bed, which talks about the benefits of parents sleeping with their children. Again, this is really bad medical advice, and if parents use any type of substance or medication to aid in sleep, they should definitely not sleep with their children, especially young babies. For some women though, it just feels right and works really well. The notion of separating our children from us and putting them in another room is a fairly new phenomenon. Throughout most of human history, the majority of people have not had the means to give a new baby its own nursery, and mothers sleeping with their infants was perfectly natural.
I spent the first 6 weeks getting up every 2-3 hours to feed my daughter, and I was exhausted all the time, and I got to where I just started falling back to sleep with her next to me. Before long, I just let her sleep with me, and it was perfect. Somehow, I was always somewhat aware of where she was, even when I was asleep. She would wake up every 2-3 hours and nurse, but because I was right there, I would barely wake up. She wouldn’t even cry or whimper. She would just stir a little, eat, and go right back to sleep.
I was able to do that until she was about 6 months, and then she got too squirmy and was able to move around the bed too much, and I was afraid she’d fall off, but by then she was sleeping through the night anyway. Again, not something I’d ever recommend mothers should do because it’s very controversial, and medically, it’s ill-advised, but from my own personal experience, it was so bonding to sleep next to her and I was able to stay well rested because, both her sleep and mine, was very peaceful. You’ll figure out what works best for you and ME, but don’t be afraid to try different things. There isn’t one right way.
Miracle – The token collector trophy has been around for a very long time, maybe since the beginning, but it’s very rare to win. I’ve only won it twice in my ten years of playing, so congratulations! That’s a really nice trophy to add to your collection! How is your son doing? I hope he’s just got some allergies acting up and he’s not getting sick.
I empathize with your remodel. We’ve been remodeling a large section of our house, and it is taking way longer than we every anticipated. We’re doing the work ourselves to save money, and with my husband on crutches, it’s now on hold. It’s annoying because my laundry room is in that section of the house. At least it’s functional now, which is awesome! I went without my laundry room for a couple years while we were slooowwwlllyyy remodeling it. Had to go to the laundromat every week. Bleh! So I won’t complain too much, because at least it works now!
But the section we’re remodeling is sectioned off from the rest of the house so that we don’t get dust in the living area, and the only way to get to my laundry room is to go out the front door and walk around the house to the back door. That’s not a big deal when the weather is nice, but in my area, it seems to rain about 70% of the time. And most of January, my sidewalk and driveway were covered with ice and snow. So I’d be carrying as much laundry as I could possibly carry at one time, basket with folded clothes in one arm, 20 hangers with hanging clothes in my other hand, trying to use a pinky finger to pull the door closed, walking as fast as possible on ice, which is to say super slow, then a shirt slips off the hanger and falls in the slow, and I stand there trying to decide what to do. Because to get it, I’m going to have to set my basket in the snow, but to leave it is to accept defeat, because then I have to come back out for it, and the whole reason for carrying three people’s wardrobes at once was to avoid having to go back out in the snow! Oh… the dilemmas of the modern housewife when your laundry area is under construction… 😀

I kept both my girls in a bassinet in my room for the first couple of months then moved them into the crib in the other room. It does make those middle of the night feedings easier being in the same room.
